Can anyone recommend a couple of good books on learning directx 9 and especially towards gaming and developing custom ui controls? Also, do you think that managed Directx is the way to go or unmanaged?
Game Coding Complete, Second Edition
Simulation and Event Modeling for Game Developers
The first one was a given. I have both editions and have enjoyed and learned a lot from both. I was hoping though for replies on specific books about DirectX.
yeah man I figured you had Mr Mikes books(s) but you never know. If you want just the DX9 framework/coding standard then use the online help. The sim book I suggest covers the UI portion of DX in a tutorial sort of way. I think its great for a beginning/intermediate game/simlation learner (i use the term learner loosely) looking for guidance on how to use DX for UI interaction with game entities.
I think LaMothe's is great for 2d.-Larrik Jaerico
LaMothe is a good author but he's sort of pompus. As long as you look at it as a refernece rather than a piece of liturature then i think you'll be fine reading LaMothe's books..Code
push you ; haha!
Strategy Game Programming wth DirectX 9.0, by Todd Baron is a pretty decent book.
I also enjoy LaMothe's books, though Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus is a bit dated now (DirectX 7, I think).
