I have recently got to the point in the book when it says that I can create my own minor game. The thing that I'm stumped about is how would I go about putting the pieces together. See I understand the components but my problem is which parts go first in the miniature game. If you could help me out thanks.

Start with the application, game logic, and view classes. You should be able to cobble together a simple app using those classes. Then get DirectX to work. You can test it by rendering a simple square (or cube if you're going for 3d, though I wouldn't recommend that).
Once you have a square, try to put a texture on it. Then make it move to wherever you click on the screen. Then add another square and write some code to see if they're intersecting.
Build it up piece by piece.
